Porn shocks school

This is a story beleagered teacher librarians didn’t need. While a stellar professional service is already under attack and cuts, bad press hurts morale. Whether alleged teacher is actually guilty or not, education is still wounded in the public forum. Sad story. AS

A Labrador teacher was scheduled to appear in a court for a bail hearing Tuesday on child pornography charges as the school community copes with the news.

Mark Baxter White, 40, was arrested at his Happy Valley-Goose Bay home on Friday evening and was later charged with four counts, including making child pornography, distributing child pornography and luring a child.

White taught English and social studies at Mealy Mountain Collegiate for the last five years, and has also worked as the high school’s librarian.

RCMP said a tip from the FBI led to the investigation, and that the complainant is a U.S. girl who says she was blackmailed into performing sexual acts in front of her computer.

“I just don’t want to believe it because he was one of my favourite teachers in the school,” said student Katharine Warr.

‘It was, yeah, shocking. I can’t get over it right now,” said fellow student Vanessa Huszar.

“He was actually really nice — really easy to get along with and a great role model.”

Parent Pat Loder said the arrest has prompted her to talk with her two school-age children.

“It’s been a real wakeup call for both of them, I think, and for all the kids,” she said.

“I know the high school kids are talking as well and the parents are kind of concerned.”

White has been suspended with pay from his position while the Labrador District School Board continues its own investigation.

“The board’s investigation will look at evidence from the RCMP,” Bruce Vey, director of education with the board, said in an interview.

“The teacher will be given an opportunity to respond to the allegations and once we’ve completed that investigation … a decision will be made on his employment.”
